Bicycle models

November 18, 2007 | Filed Under photos

For my birthday (2 months ago), I got some nice bicycle models from my girlfriend’s father. It reminds me of my younger days, when I used to play a lot with these things.

For these shots, I put the models on the kitchen table and used the Nikon CLS system to trigger my SB-600 remotely. To get some extra light, I used a mirror to reflect the strobe light to lighten up the dark side of the drivers. I had to tighten my diafragm to darken the room, as my D80 only supports strobes up to shutter speed 1/200.

It’s a great shot, but I tend to disagree about your statement of having to close down the aperture to darken the room. In my opinion, you won’t darken the room by closing down the aperture (when you use a strobe as your main light) but you do that with your shutter speed. Your aperture controls the light coming from the strobe, your shutter speed the ambient light.
That’s my two cents worth of input.
    Great shot nevertheless

    Jurgen,

I completely agree you should use the shutter speed to control the ambient and the aperture to control the flash. Because I’m limited to 1/200, I had no choice but using the aperture to further limit the ambient. Since the aperture also controls the power of the strobe, I had to control the strobe-power from the flash instead of using the aperture.
